Laird Connectivity’s customers across multiple industries have a diverse set of requirements and specific needs. They asked for a high performance, robust, industrial wireless IoT module: one that’s rugged, simplifies their BOM, is globally certified, has reliable connectivity, and easy to integrate.

Our new Sterling 70 series answers that call for next-generation Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity. Powered by NXP’s innovative 88W9098 silicon, the Sterling 70 is purpose-built for industrial IoT connectivity through a secure, reliable, and robust feature set. It’s performance IoT from the start: fully certified, easy to integrate, and is the fastest route to the market for IoT.

  • Reliable: Integrated PA (Power Amplifier) and LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) with 2x2 MU-MIMO for reliable connectivity in harsh RF environments.
  • Multi Wireless: Rich feature-set including latest 802.11ax Wi-Fi, simultaneous dual band 2.4 and 5 GHz, Dual-Mode Bluetooth including LE Long Range.
  • Robust: With industrial temperature range and solder-down module, is suitable for industrial vibration and impact demands.
  • Compatible: Open source, MPU-neutral software including Linux Backports and a Yocto layer ensures broad kernel and BSP compatibility. Native support for NXP’s latest i.MX 6/7/8 evaluation kits and Linux BSPs. 
  • Secure: Supports the latest WPA3-Personal and WPA3-Enterprise security standards.

FAQ

Will Sterling-70 plan to support radar detect function in AP mode?

No, DFS band won't be supported in AP mode in ST70 series.

What is MU-MIMO?

MIMO stands for Multiple Input, Multiple Output and uses multiple transmit and receive antennas to improve quality and capacity of the wireless connection.

What are some disadvantages of using AP+STA?

The AP and STA are on the same channel potentially causing disconnections if the STA roams to a different AP. The Sterling-70 has the advantage of dual independent radios that can run on different Wi-Fi channels.

What is the MCS index for Wi-Fi?

MCS stands for Modulation Coding Scheme and is an industry metric index based on Wi-Fi connection parameters between a client and wireless access point. These parameters include modulation type, coding rate, spatial streams, channel width, and guard interval.

Can you tell me more about the m.2 connector used on your Wi-Fi modules?

The m.2 used on our Wi-Fi modules is an E-key. Review the PCI Express M.2 Specification from the PCI-SIG website for more information.

  • Here is an Application note on E-Key from NXP
  • When using an m.2 Wi-Fi module ensure your platform supports the interface by the selected m.2 Wi-Fi module. An example is an external sleep clock which is needed by some Laird Connectivity modules.

 

What versions of Android are supported by Laird Wi-Fi modules?

This can be found by reviewing the release notes for the specific product on GitHub.

 

I have a Ubuntu system that has automatic updates will this affect my Wi-Fi?

Yes as new kernels are updated in Ubuntu automatically it will break backports and will need to be reinstalled.

What BLE PHYs are supported on the Sterling 70?

The Sterling 70 supports 1MPHY, 2MPHY and LE Coded PHY.

Does the Sterling 70 Support WPA3?

Yes, WPA3-Personal and WPA3-Enterprise are supported on the Sterling 70.

Does the Sterling 70 support WiFi 6e?

Wi-Fi 6e is not supported on the Sterling 70. The Sterling 70 only supports the 2.4GHz and 5GHz band. It does not support the 6GHz band (i.e. Wi-FI 6e).

Does 802.11ax on the Sterling 70 support 2.4GHz?

The Sterling-70 module is a Dual MAC/Dual PHY radio.
802.11ac (Wi-Fi 6) is only supported on the 5 GHz band. 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 5) is only on the 2.4GHz band

Laird Connectivity’s products are specifically designed to meet the needs of the industrial and medical markets, which typically require 7 – 10 years product lifecycle. Although Laird Connectivity can’t guarantee that a component used in our products will not be obsoleted and cannot be reasonably substituted, Laird Connectivity can assure customers we will continue to sell our product when we have customer demand and can obtain the necessary components to build our products.
