Article on Effective Design Strategies for the IoT Featured in Visions Digital Magazine

An article written by Mike Roberts, Director of Disruptive Innovation for LS Research (now a part of Laird) was recently featured in Issue 1 2016 of Product Development and Management Association's (PDMA) Visions, a quarterly digital magazine. Titled, “IoT for the Rest of Us: Effective Design Strategies for Wirelessly Connected Devices”, the article maps out a design strategy for product managers who are working through the challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) to make the wireless revolution of the IoT become a reality.

The article discusses the endless opportunities resulting from the massive growth of the IoT as well as the challenges of designing a connected product. “So many of the applications of IoT are science fiction come to life. But what about the rest of us—those who are responsible for actually designing these products and making them a reality? We have to build these things. We have to make this sci-fi stuff come true, but it isn’t easy. The honest truth is that IoT design is difficult. It can be fraught with challenges, full of wrong turns and painfully slow.” Fortunately Mike provides a few steps that product managers can take to bypass many of these challenges and put complex design projects on a path to success. With more than 30+ years of experience in product development, Mike also offers a few suggestions on how to design wirelessly-enabled products quickly and successfully. He writes, "With IoT projects, product managers need to think very carefully about what not to include in the connected product. Keeping the in-product elements to a minimum allows the design teams to make the scope of these re-designs more manageable, skip over the design steps that require external resources, and get to a finished product faster."
