ASPION found a solution to their needs in the Laird Connectivity BL652 module. Its Bluetooth + NFC combination proved to be a perfect wireless coupling for their application. Also, their use of the onboard microcontroller allowed them to develop event-driven functionality that saved battery life and produced excellent results.

Introduction: Quality Goods are an Investment Worth Protecting

When it comes to the highest quality engineered goods, it’s hard to top the German export market. German engineering is recognized worldwide for producing reliable goods and machinery that are the best in their class. When the job is critical and when the machinery must be reliable, it’s often German products that companies look to as a guarantee that the job gets done.

ASPION is a smart sensor and electronics company headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany. They formed in 2011 to develop and market energy-optimized smart sensors for the new generation of industrial use cases. They knew that products of exceptional quality are an investment of greater importance, and one worth protecting.

Quality begins in manufacturing, but it’s supported throughout the full shipping process until it reaches its customer. This means that equipment must be protected in various stages of transit and, if something goes wrong, it can be damaging to the manufacturer. Manufacturers depend on their equipment arriving undamaged to protect their reputation for quality. A dropped shipment can result in broken equipment – equipment that the manufacturer doesn’t even know is broken until a customer has a complaint. For this reason, sensor makers offer a broad variety of devices to provide transit measurements for manufacturers, to help guarantee that products arrive as intended.

ASPION’s second version of their G-Log sensors would keep pace with customer demands and outclass competition by providing a few key advantages. Firstly, their new sensors would connect over a longer wireless range, enabling an operator to gather readings from several meters away, even through sealed freight containers. They would log shock events down to the millisecond and read temperature and humidity every five minutes, providing a very clear picture of transport conditions. They would also aim to accomplish this at a price point well below similar products on the market.

The Results: A Top Tier Sensor at an Incredible Value

ASPION’s G-Log 2 delivered on its promise, improving on their existing design and delivering on the promise of more functionality at a better price. The G-Log 2 introduced humidity detection to the series, allowed much greater range than the previous model’s small-scale NFC, and featured a unified smartphone app for access to the full suite of G-Log sensors. The ASPION G-Log 2 brings an unprecedented degree of transparency and traceability to transported goods.

On the price-to-performance ratio, the G-Log 2 is unlike anything else in the industry. It provides three-axis shock measurements at the millisecond level and environmental monitoring at an incredibly competitive price point.

The greatly increased flash memory is capable of logging 950 total events, a 300% increase over the previous product. It integrated seamlessly with the ASPION G-Log system, which consists of PC software, smartphone apps, and expandable premium services such as cloud, location, and network functions.

The G-Log 2 is built on an established series of Bluetooth 5 modules from Laird Connectivity which means their future innovations enjoy long-term support for future stability. Laird Connectivity serves as a true partner to bring wireless products to market, working with our customers to support long design cycles and continuous innovation.
