FIPS 140-2 is the U.S. federal government standard for encryption and decryption. Our previous blog posts on FIPS 140-2 (here and here) noted how few medical devices are validated for FIPS 140-2.

Welch Allyn® alluded to that fact in an announcement that the Wi-Fi® radio in two of its vital signs monitors has been validated for FIPS 140-2.  The announcement states that the FIPS validation for the radio makes the monitors the first to be “authorized for wireless deployment within U.S. federal government healthcare agencies”.  For more information about FIPS 140-2 with Welch Allyn monitors, click here.

The radio in Welch Allyn monitors does not appear yet on the official NIST list of "Validated FIPS 140-1 and FIPS 140-2 Cryptographic Modules". We expect to see it there soon.
