Earlier this month an article titled “Care Connection: Ensure Wi-Fi Works” was published in the online magazine, For the Record. Written by Kevin Robins with input from the Wi-Fi Alliance‘s Healthcare Marketing Task Group, the article discusses and provides tips on ensuring reliable Wi-Fi networks in healthcare settings.

Wireless technologies, specifically Wi-Fi, have changed the healthcare landscape. A now critical technology, Wi-Fi enables Connected Hospitals which bring benefits to everyone affected by healthcare. By connecting medical devices to Wi-Fi networks, hospitals can integrate EHRs, prevent hospital readmissions, save nurses time, improve patient outcomes, and enable workflow automation. However, in order for this to be possible, “…hospital IT administrators need to manage their networks 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to maintain a high quality of service (QoS).” The article goes on to list several steps to ensure success throughout the entire life cycle including factors that must be considered prior to introducing a new type of device as well as what to think about in terms of channel planning, interference, and multipath and signal distortion.
