LSR Announces Two New Solutions for Embedded and 802.11ac Wi-Fi Applications

LSR, a Laird business, announced two new solutions that help companies design and certify wirelessly-connected products quickly and successfully. Based on Cypress Semiconductor Corp. radios, these solutions expand LSR's Sterling family of Wi-Fi + Bluetooth multi-standard modules, joining the popular Sterling-LWB 2.4. The new solutions address additional applications such as embedded applications where a microprocessor is not utilized, as well as applications that require dual-band Wi-Fi with cutting edge 802.11ac capabilities for ultra-high data rates. The two new solutions are:

Sterling-LWB5 dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Smart, and Bluetooth Smart Ready module

Like the Sterling-LWB, the Sterling-LWB5 enables companies to add wireless capabilities to electronic products typically running Linux, with the Sterling-LWB5 offering the additional capabilities of dual-band Wi-Fi with full support of the IEEE 802.11ac standard. The Sterling-LWB5 provides an unmatched breadth of options, certifications, and antenna options, which altogether provide greater flexibility to meet the challenging requirements of many wireless designs. This certified module is based on the Cypress (formerly Broadcom) BCM43353 chipset to create one of the very first commercially available solutions that offers IEEE 802.11ac capabilities for ultra-high data rate 5 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, while also featuring classic Bluetooth and BLE connectivity. The module comes in three configurations to best address specific applications, each boasting an industrial temperature rating (-40° to +85° C) and an industry-leading range of certifications and antenna options.

Product samples and development boards with an SD card form factor are planed to be available in the 4th quarter of 2016. LSR will begin working with select customers immediately to successfully design the Sterling-LWB5 into their wireless product applications.

Practical Applications:

  • Security & Building Automation
  • Internet of Things / M2M Connectivity
  • Telematics
  • Smart Gateways

You can now leverage the high-performance Sterling-LWB module for embedded MCU applications as well. The Sterling-LWB for WICED reference platform provides a very simple and fast way to add both Wi-Fi and BLE v4.1 connectivity to your microcontroller-based design utilizing the power of Cypress' robust WICED software development kit. The low-cost , pre-certified Sterling-LWB is now validated with the STM32F411 MCU and can be migrated to other popular MCUs, giving you unmatched speed in adding Wi-Fi and BLE to your application. This comprehensive reference platform features a carrier board for easy connectivity with the STM32F411 Discovery Kit, extensive documentation and software examples, TiWiConnect cloud connectivity and ModuleLink mobile app for easy development and integration. This platform is ideal for cases where a product design has an existing STM32 microcontroller and is looking to add wireless connectivity, saving on the additional cost, layout size, and complexity of the product's PCB that a similar module with an integrated STM32 microcontroller would require.

Sterling-LWB for WICED carrier boards are planned to be available in the 4th quarter of 2016.

Practical Applications:

  • Security & Building Automation
  • Internet of Things / M2M Connectivity
  • Smart Gateways
