Laird Announces New 60 Series of Wi-Fi + Bluetooth Modules at Electronica

November 9, 2016, 11:10 am

Today at the Electronica 2016 trade show in Munich, Germany Laird announced plans for the new 60 Series of Professional and Enterprise Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules. Specifically designed to offer developers wireless solutions that deliver secure, reliable connectivity in difficult RF environments, the 60 Series will introduce 802.11ac, 2x2 MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, and Bluetooth 5 ready hardware on one low-power module.

Building on the success of Laird’s 40, 45, and 50 Series, the new 60 Series will leverage the very latest silicon technology in addition to Laird’s industry-renowned software enhancements to provide a solution that offers the greatest possible range, security, and connectivity in a certified module today. This new line of modules will offer product developers a future-ready solution that is equipped with hardware to support the next round of significant innovations in wireless, such as the much-anticipated Bluetooth 5 release and upcoming 802.11mc Wi-Fi standards.

The new 60 Series modules will be the first Laird solutions to feature dual-band 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi with 2x2 MU-MIMO (Multiple-User, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) capabilities, coupled with the latest Bluetooth version 4.2 technology for both Classic Bluetooth and secure Bluetooth Smart connectivity. One key advantage of the 60 Series offering of 802.11ac with MU-MIMO is the ability to support simultaneous downstream connections. With intelligent, fast scanning and roaming the module will be able to connect in a fraction of a second to maintain connectivity as the device moves throughout a facility, minimizing the risk of critical data that is lost due to latency in finding the best access point. That means 60 Series enabled client devices do not need to wait in line to receive large data files from an access point. For example, these capabilities in a hospital’s wirelessly enabled infusion pumps would allow multiple units to download the oftentimes large drug library files all at once.

Product samples and development kits for the 60 Series family are anticipated in the first quarter of 2017.
