In Hospitals, Does BYOD Mean Bring Your Own Disease?

Datalogic, a provider of electronic point-of-sale scanners and handheld mobile computers, has published a provocative article on the “bring your own device”, or BYOD, phenomenon. In the article, Datalogic infers that BYOD may be a bad idea in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Because smartphones and personal tablets are not manufactured to withstand rigorous disinfectant solutions required for a hospital, they cannot be cleaned effectively and can cause the spread of diseases within a hospital. Datalogic asks: Shouldn’t antimicrobial devices be mandatory in healthcare?
