CPBU Articles Featured on ECN and PD&D Websites

Articles from the Laird Technologies® Connectivity Products Business Unit (CPBU) were recently featured on websites for two publications, ECN and Product Design and Development. The topics covered were Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® coexistence (ECN) and Wi-Fi options for medical devices (PD&D).

The ECN article, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth coexistence, was co-authored by Sue White, CPBU Documentation and Certification Manager, and Ron Seide, VP/GM of CPBU. The article describes effective methods for achieving coexistence of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios to ensure reliable connections and performance.  Three coexistence techniques are discussed:

  1. The use of temporal isolation in conjunction with time division multiplexing (TDM) for effective alternating of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals
  2. Spatial isolation, which is almost impossible with combination Bluetooth/Wi-Fi chips and modules that share a common transmitter, receiver, and antenna
  3. Adaptive frequency hopping (AFH)

Finally, the article addresses the most effective means for mitigating interference between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios.

The PD&D article, Comparing Wi-Fi Options for Medical Devices, was co-authored by Sue White and Chris Bolinger, CPBU Director of Product Management. The article provides an overview of two types of modules, standard and intelligent, explains the pros and cons of each, and provides guidance on which type is better for a given medical device based on four factors:

  1. Medical device computing resources
  2. Costs
  3. How Wi-Fi software maintenance and upgrades will be handled
  4. Device design priorities
